DeRidder, LA – Beauregard Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BECi) announces its annual scholarship program available to eligible high school seniors and college students. BECi will award six one-year scholarships, valued at $1,500 each, to students who reside on BECi service lines. The winners will be selected at the BECi Annual meeting held Saturday, March 22, 2008 by a random drawing. The student does not have to be present to win. Only one application per student will be accepted to enable each student to be equally eligible for the scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, March 7, 2008.
This is the 15th annual scholarship offering through BECi. The scholarship funds are not taken from normal operating funds, but from two BECi programs:
The Share Program allocates 50 percent to the area parish agencies to be used for energy assistance and 50 percent to the BECi Scholarship Fund.
Through legislative changes made in 1993, unclaimed checks were allowed to remain in the scholarship funds to assist students within BECi service area rather than forwarding the monies to the state’s general treasury fund.
At the January 2008 monthly meeting, the Beauregard Electric Cooperative, Inc. Board of Directors added six institutions of higher learning in which scholarship monies may be used. Eligible institutions of higher learning, scholarship requirements and the applications are listed on BECi’s cooperative website. To apply, stop by any of BECi’s three office locations, or simply apply online at www.beci.org.
