BECi tops nation with safety record

Beauregard Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BECi) Safety Coordinator Eddie Ware accepted two safety awards recognizing the consumer-owned electric utility’s outstanding safety performance on behalf of the management and employees of the Co-op at an awards ceremony held July 26 in Baton Rouge.

Frank X. Fraas, President and CEO of Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange traveled from the corporate office in Lenexa, Kansas to award BECi with special recognition for the achievement of working more than 1.8 million employee-hours with no lost-time accident as of May 31, 2004.

“BECi has achieved a number of hours that no other co-op has ever reached,” explains Fraas. “Our goal is to personally honor co-ops who have reached more than one million safe employee-hours in the nation. I have never seen a co-op with as many hours as BECi and we have presented this award for more than 20 years,” states Fraas.

Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange is the leading provider of property and casualty insurance for rural electric utilities in 40 states. Federated also insures a growing number of telephone systems throughout the United States.

Buck Theriot, Director of Loss Control with the Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives, Inc. (ALEC) also presented a safety award to BECi in recognition to the employees who have worked without a lost-time accident since August 1997.

Safety is one of the most important avenues of service for the employees and the general public. BECi maintains a very comprehensive safety program through educational programs and has become a model for other utility companies statewide.
